Buying Prescription Drugs in Canada?
I have been filling prescriptions in Canada
for years. I have never declared any medications, and
have never been asked. I have prescriptions for all
meds. I bring copies or originals of all my prescriptions from
my Dr. in the States. I spend a lot of time in
Quebec and my pharmacist here accepts my prescriptions and
keeps them on file. When I need refills, I phone him
from the States and he mails them to me. I have not had
a problem in more than five years. You may, however, be
required to have a local Dr. rewrite the prescription for you.
I have also filled my prescriptions in
other parts of Canada. On occasion, I have had to go to a
local Dr. and have them write a prescription, because
the pharmacy would not accept the US prescription. I call
first and explain that I have scrips for my meds from my Dr.,
and I only need them to rewrite the scrip. I call a few
local Drs. and get the best price. I have paid as low as $20
Cdn and as high as $45 Cdn. It is always much less all up than
it costs in the US.
Unlike the U.S., Walmart does not always
have the lowest price, and my experience has been that they
will not/can not transfer scrips from the U.S. I
recommend you check for availability and price on the specific
meds you require. Some have a different name for the same med
and some are not available. When you get the prices online,
you will be armed with a ballpark cost. Then check at a couple
of pharmacies for their price. Don't be surprised if the local
pharmacy is cheaper. I have done the above in BC, Alberta,
Quebec and the Maritimes and always save $$$.
