A World Traveler's  Hiking

The Appalachian Trail is a continuous footpath that is 2,160 unbroken miles and extends from Maine to Georgia along the Appalachian Mountain. One hundred miles of the trail passes through the Shenandoah National Park south of Big Meadow, between Thorton Gap and Front Royal. It is considered a premier recreational hiking trail with gentle grades, climbs rarely exceeding 500 - 1,000 feet and roadside amenities. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club maintain several backpacking cabins in the park. Please contact them for more information (703)242-0693.

Product Review:

Trekking Poles -  If I had one choice of a gift for hiking this would be it.  Regardless of your age, your knees will last longer using trekking poles, especially on long downhill treks.  They are similar to ski poles but with many beneficial designs for safer hiking.  When you hike with a set of trekking poles you are balancing the right distribution and shock over four limbs, instead of two.  Important features are:  telescopic adjustment for different terrain ;look for soft grips that fit into your hand comfortably; anti-shock system with a range of settings absorbing the impact of the pole striking the ground, easing the strain on shoulders and arms;  make sure you can lock the anti-shock system out when needed.
